COSTA RICA POSTAL RATES
1923-1942

1923

           domestic rate = rate for countries of Spanish American Postal Union
           tarifa nacional = tarifa por los paises del Unión Postal Panamericano
           letter / carta : 5 centimos ; postcard / tarjeta postal 4 cts
           letter to / carta por UPU countries : 20cts (til / desde 1 december 1921)

1924 ( october) : letter / carta (domesctic and UPAE) 10cts por 20g ; PC / tarjeta 5cts ;UPU PC : 10c

1929 (october 31) : letter / carta (domesctic and UPAE) 13cts , 10c per each add 20g or fraction

                          The purpose of the increase from 10c to 13c was to benefit postal , telegraph and radio employees by
                          providing additional pension funds. ( decree 3, dated october 21 , 1929 and published in La Gaceta on
                          october 31 of the same year)

1931 ( effective june 10 ?) :

( after decree 4 , may 3 , 1931 , approved may 7 and published in La Gaceta of may 9 , 1931)
letter / carta (domesctic and UPAE) decreased / devuelto 10cts

airmail : add the airmail surcharge at specific rate per 15 g .

Until 1939 there was no through airmail service to Europe.

Airmail letters addressed to Europe were sent airmail to the USA at the airmail surcharge to the USA,
to which the 20 ctmos UPU rate had to be added. It is recorded that until 19 Sept 1932 the correct postage
on letters had to include stamps for the first class surface letter rate. The surface letter rate component
of the total charge was then dropped. The inference then is that after this date only the airmail surcharge
applied (in 15 gm. wt. steps).

1939 : letter to / carta por UPU countries : 20cts (first 20g) / then 10c ; P.C. 10c.
1940 : domestic ( and also UPAE) letter / carta local ( y UPAE) : 15cts
